SUMMARY

The effects of reforestation with Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis on physical, chemical and organic matter properties of Cerrados soils were investigated, using soils under native vegetation as controls. An increase in bulk density under Eucalyptus on soil classified as a Latosol intermediate to Quartz Sand (L-AQ) was detected, but aggregate mean weight diameter and aggregates > 2 mm were not altered under cultivated forests, as well as the partial available water content (water between 6 and 100 KPa tension). Decrease of bases and N were detected under Pinus, while acidification and increase of Ca, Mg, N and P, and a loss of K, occurred under Eucalyptus in a loamy Latosol (LL). On the L-AQ soil, there was an increase in P content under Eucalyptus. C content was reduced under cultivated forests on the superficial layer, being these reductions more intense as less soil clay content and concentrated in the sand particle-size fractions. Carbohydrate and lignin analyses indicate a higher degree of soil organic matter decomposition under Pinus and Eucalyptus in the LL, but not in the L-AQ. More saturated humic substances with less O-alkyl groups under Pinus and Eucalyptus on the LL were detected, whereas on the L-AQ there was a slight increase on the aromatic groups under Eucalyptus. Under Cerrado natural vegetation, in the L-AQ, there was more saturated alkyl groups and less aromaticity than in the LL. It was found higher litter amounts under Pinus and Eucalyptus on the LL soil than under the controls, but not on the L-AQ. This soil showed higher amounts of litter than the LL. The litter chemical composition of cultivated forests were in general lower than the Cerrado vegetation one. Carbon and carbohydrate contents indicated a higher degree of decomposition of the Cerrado vegetation litter on the LL soil than on the L-AQ.
